Technical Visits

The technical visits of ICOM-CC 2020 conference will offer the participants a unique experience to visit the best museums in China and their conservation labs. The list will be expanded as we get closer to the Triennial Conference.

1. Palace Museum -- Exhibitions and Relics Hospital

The Palace Museum, formerly the Forbidden city, was where Chinese emperors once resided. The forbidden city has around 600 years of history and the museum has an extensive collection of the most valuable ancient treasures in China.

The Palace Museum has established the Palace Museum Relics Hospital (Conservation department) which is devoted to the use of science and technology in terms of heritage and artifact preservation. Completed in 2016, the relic hospital is the largest of its kind, with a comprehensive array of functions, research facilities and the largest number of professional staff of any other similar institution. The Relic Hospital is also home to the International Training Center for Conservation of the International Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC). The Relic Hospital carries out technological restoration and routine maintenance on collections of relics supporting institutions in China and around the world.

* Participants will be divided into small groups while in museums providing different visiting routes. The groups will go to different areas separately and then switch their routes so that each group will be able to visit all areas.

2. National Museum of China

With its enormous exhibition space and extensive collections, the National Museum of China is a must-visit museum in Beijing, signature collections such as the famous jade burial suit and rhino-shaped wine vessel are both 2000-year old.

3. The Cultural Heritage Conservation Institute of the National Museum of China

The Cultural Heritage Conservation Institute of the National Museum of China was constructed in 2018. The Institute is in charge of restoring and conserving 1.4 million collections in the museum. The Institute has many research centers specialized in environmental monitoring and control as well as restoration centers for various materials. The laboratory of the cultural heritage conservation Institute is open for a technical visit.

4. The Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage

The Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage (CACH) is a non-profit organization dedicated to cultural property-related research, protection, restoration, and training. As one of the most successful professional institutions in the field, it involves diverse disciplines as humanity, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.

5. The National Art Museum of China

The National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) is the only national museum of fine arts in China. The museum houses more than 110,000 pieces of various collections, most of which are representative works of different periods and great artworks of Chinese masters from ancient times to present.

6. National Library of China & National Museums of Class books

The National Library of China (NLC) serves as the repository of the nation's publications, a national bibliographic center, a national center for preservation and conservation of ancient books, as well as the national museum of ancient books. The Ancient Books Preservation Laboratory National Library of China is one of the first professional preservation and conservation Laboratory specialize for ancient books in China.

7. The Capital Museum

The Capital Museum presents the tangible and intangible, cultural and natural heritage of Beijing. It also has special exhibitions from other cities in China and the world. The Capital Museum’s exhibitions and its Relic Conservation Laboratory are both open for visit.

8. Zhoukoudian site museum

Zhoukoudian site is situated some 50km to the southwest of the urban district of Beijing, where the world-famous Peking Man was discovered. More than 20 archaeological localities have been found at Zhoukoudian, such as Peking Man Cave and Upper Cave and New Cave. The discoveries of human and other animal fossils, human-made tools, and the evidence of fire using astonished the world in the 20th century.

9. Beijing Museum of Natural History

Beijing Museum of Natural History is the first large-scale museum of natural history in China. The museum focuses on specimen collection, academic research and public education of paleontology, zoology, botany, and anthropology. The exhibition, Fossil Restoration Room, and Taxidermy Room are open for visit.

10. Beijing Auto Museum

Beijing Auto Museum focuses on the automobile industry in China. The museum has more than 80 valuable car collections and many interactive facilities. The exhibition covers a wide range of real vehicles, industrial-related literature, photographs. It showcases not only the history and future of the industry itself but also the relationship between technology and society.

11. Beijing Stone Carvings Art Museum

The Beijing Stone Carving Art Museum used to be the royal temple "zhenjue" of Tibetan Buddhism in the Ming Dynasty, and is nowadays flanked by Beijing Zoo. The idea of building a museum of stone carving was inspired by the remains of a Vajrasana Pagoda from the Zhenjue Temple. Opening in 1987, it is the first local museum in China that collects stone carving antiques all over Beijing and holds outdoor exhibitions.
